Injury & Back Pain

In the summer of 1997, I began to suffer from chronic low back pain that eventually lead to severe pain down my left leg. I suffered from this problem on and off for about one year. After finally convincing myself I had a serious back problem, I saw an orthopedic specialist, he advised me to get an MRI done, which I did. The diagnosis was “slipped disc” in the area of L5-S1. He then referred me to a neurosurgeon, and his advice was to operate to remove the disc. Through all of this, I was taking Hydrocodone and Lodine to help deal with the pain.

Being athletic and very active in sports, it was very difficult to believe and deal with the fact that I had this problem at such a young age. When my pain was at its worst, I was unable to walk. All I could do was lay flat on my back and be still, unless I absolutely had to move. This occurred on several occasions.

My impression of chiropractors was skeptical at best at that time. I thought of them as “back butchers”. This was until I spoke to a nurse whom I worked with. She also had studied to be a doctor of chiropractic and explained all the advantages of Chiropractic care to me.

I was either going to have surgery or consult a D.C., so I called up Dr. Rider and told him, “I’m set to have surgery; I’ll give you two weeks to help me.” In that two weeks with Dr. Rider’s care, my pain was reduced to a level at which I could live a halfway normal life. After six months of care, I feel no pain whatsoever!
